Set up Android speech recognition

Download offline language packs for on-device speech recognition.

Flashcards and other on-device features use your phone's built-in speech recognizer. If your practice language is not installed, you need to download its offline language pack so recognition works without an internet connection.

Why am I seeing this?

Your device's speech recognition service does not have the language pack needed for your practice language. Downloading the pack lets speech recognition work offline and is required for flashcards.

Setup by device type

Choose the section that matches your Android device.

Pixel phones use Google's speech services by default.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to System > Languages & input > Speech > Offline speech recognition (or On-device speech recognition).
  3. Find your practice language in the list and tap the download icon.
  4. Wait for the download to finish.
  5. Return to ConvoCopilot and try again.

Notes

  • The exact path may vary slightly by Android version. You can also search for "Offline speech recognition" in the Settings search bar.

Samsung devices often use Google speech services, but the settings path differs.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to General management > Keyboard list and default > Voice input > Google Voice typing (or Gboard voice typing).
  3. Tap Offline speech recognition (or Languages).
  4. Find your practice language and tap Download.
  5. Wait for the download to finish.
  6. Return to ConvoCopilot and try again.

Notes

  • On some Samsung devices the path is Settings > General management > Speech > Offline speech recognition.
  • If you use Samsung Keyboard with Samsung voice input, switch the default voice input to Google for best compatibility.

Most Android devices use Google's speech recognition. The path is usually similar to Pixel or Samsung.

  1. Open Settings and search for "Offline speech recognition" or "Speech recognition".
  2. Find and download your practice language.
  3. If no results appear, go to Languages & input > Voice input and look for an offline languages option.
  4. Return to ConvoCopilot and try again.

Notes

  • Some manufacturers (Xiaomi, OnePlus, etc.) may place the setting under additional or advanced settings.

Troubleshooting

  • If the language does not appear for download, make sure your Google app and Google Speech Services are up to date in the Play Store.
  • Some languages may not be available for offline speech recognition on all devices. In that case the feature will use server-based recognition when available.
  • If you recently installed the language pack, restart ConvoCopilot and try again.

After downloading

  • Return to ConvoCopilot. The app will detect the newly installed language automatically.
  • If the language still is not recognized, restart the app or restart your device.
